Join me on an unforgettable 7-day photography workshop visiting one of the great hidden jewels of landscape photography in Australia: the wild and magnificent Tarkine Region. Throughout the workshop we will delve into the magnificent northwest of Tasmania, photographing some of the most rugged coastline, pure rainforest, and pristine rivers in the country.
While we will have a rough itinerary, our schedule will remain flexible in order to match the locations with the prevailing conditions to cultivate the most optimal image creation windows. Your expert leader will be with you the entire time, helping you to make the very most of your equipment and craft your imagery as well as possible; both through composition on location and educational sessions back at our comfortable bases.
About the location
takayna/The Tarkine is home to the largest temperate rainforest in Australia, the cleanest air in the world, a large array of wild and endangered creatures, and possesses one of the most rugged, varied, and photogenic coastlines you’ll ever witness. The workshop has three comfortable bases at Smithton, Arthur River and Corinna. We’ll have access to an incredibly varied selection of photographic locations, so we’ll have something to capture and explore no matter what nature throws at us – moss-laden trees and flowing tannin rivers for the atmospheric days and jagged dramatic seascapes for those colourful sunrises and sunsets. Best of all, you’ll be guided to these places and educated on how to best capture them by an extremely passionate photographer that has created internationally-recognised images in this area, with local knowledge and a committed relationship to the landscape!
Itinerary
Our first base in Smithton provides us with a great way to kick off our 7 days of landscape photography. This places us in a central position to explore both rugged coastal locations and some of the state’s premiere locations for rainforest photography. We’ll also have an educational session or two here so you have plenty of tools and ideas to take into the rest of the week. After two fantastic nights here, we’ll make our way to our next base in Arthur River.
Arthur River provides incredibly close access to the Tarkine’s renowned wild coastline, with locations such as the Edge of the World just a few minutes down the road, as well as a short hour’s drive back to more of the region’s beautiful rainforests. Our two nights here will provide us with an amazing base to capture these world-class scenes. We’ll also join a local cruise down the Arthur River, where we’ll have the chance to capture mirror-like reflections, rainforest greenery, and even sea eagles and kingfishers in the trees. The cruise includes a delicious BBQ lunch at no extra cost, and provides a wonderful opportunity to learn more about this beautiful environment with our guides.
Our final base in Corinna places us deep amongst the rainforests in the southern area of the Tarkine region. Situated on the banks of the Pieman River, we’ll be within walking distance from several stunning trails filled with ancient moss-covered trees and autumnal fungi. On top of this, we’ll also be privately chartering our own small vessel to take us onto the river at sunrise, with the hopes of catching some more riverside rainforests and reflections under golden hour light. On our way back to Launceston, we’ll have the chance to shoot the beautiful Philosopher Falls and its surrounding forests.
While I’ll make efforts to provide editing tuition sessions during the workshop, ultimately the priority is to ensure you’re getting high quality time in the field. Because of this, all guests are entitled to a free post-workshop 1-1 Online Tuition Session, where we can run through your photos together and tailor a video call to help you get the most from your workshop photos.
Photographic Opportunities
The weather in Tasmania is highly changeable, especially on the wild west coast. Our first stop will be spent at Tall Timbers in the beautiful north-western town of Smithton. Guests will have their own private apartment, complete with a Queen bed, spacious ensuite, free wifi, TV, minibar and room service.
For the next two nights, our accommodation base will be at Arthur River Lodge, nestled along the banks of the beautiful, tannin-stained Arthur River. Flights & Logistics
If you don’t plan to extend your stay in Tasmania before or after the workshop, it is highly recommended that your flights are booked at least one day before the workshop commences and one day after it concludes, respectively. This avoids any chance of flight changes or other unforeseen circumstances either rushing or delaying our schedule. The meeting location will be provided during the information sessions.
Commencement
Launceston CBD - Wednesday April 9th @ 10:00am
Conclusion
Launceston CBD - Tuesday April 15th @ 4:00pm
Meals
During this workshop we will primarily be eating at local establishments or at restaurants within our accommodation. At Smithton, we’ll eat at the wonderful Kauri Bistro within Tall Timbers, with some great local options available for breakfast & lunch. At Arthur River we will have our dinners at the Marrawah Inn, just a short 20 minute drive from our accommodation. Corinna’s Tannin restaurant will provide us with all of our meals, including cooked lunches & dinners plus a continental breakfast.
While guests will not have any mandatory cooking to do, two breakfasts and one lunch at Arthur River during days 4 and 5 will need to be self-supplied. This is partially due to the remote nature of this location with limited local options, as well as for the flexibility of eating in the field rather than needing to return to town. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase breakfast and lunch supplies at Smithton on day 3 en-route to Arthur River.
More details will be provided after booking; please get in touch with any questions you have about food on the workshop.
