Tarkine Rivers Coasts & Forests Workshop 2027

Locations: Smithton, Arthur River & Corinna, Tasmania

Dates: April 8th-15th 2026

Instructor: Benjamin Maze

Physical Activity: Low-Moderate

Places: 4 participants

Price: $6950

Join me on an unforgettable 7-day photography workshop visiting one of the great jewels of landscape photography in Australia: the wild and magnificent Tarkine Region. Throughout the workshop we will delve into the magnificent northwest of Tasmania, photographing some of the most rugged coastline, pure rainforest, and pristine rivers in the country.

While we will have a base itinerary to work from, our schedule will remain flexible in order to match the locations with the prevailing conditions to cultivate the most optimal image creation windows. Your expert leader Benjamin Maze will be with you the entire time, helping you to make the very most of your equipment and craft your imagery as well as possible; both through composition on location and educational sessions back at our comfortable bases.

About the location

takayna/The Tarkine covers 450,000 hectares in north west Tasmania, brimming with ancient, untouched wilderness and diverse wildlife. A land of extremes, as the second largest temperate rainforest in the world, it lays claim to the world’s cleanest air; groves of the tallest flowering plant in the world (Eucalyptus regnans); a coastline on the edge of the world’s longest uninterrupted stretch of ocean; the oldest geological formations in Tasmania dating back 1.4 billion years; Huon Pine trees reaching several thousand years in age; and ancient middens, hut sites and other artefacts of the Tarkiner people that make this coastline one of the richest human archaeological zones on the planet. All this combines to create a deeply spiritual, precious landscape full of diversity and beauty for us to explore, connect with, and photograph.

The workshop has four comfortable bases at Smithton, Arthur River, Corinna and Waratah. We’ll have access to an incredibly varied selection of photographic locations, so we’ll have something to capture and explore no matter what nature throws at us – moss-laden trees and flowing tannin rivers for the atmospheric days and jagged dramatic seascapes for those colourful sunrises and sunsets. The time of year means that fascinating fungi is waiting to be discovered in every nook and cranny for the macro enjoyers. Best of all, you’ll be guided to these places and educated on how to best capture them by an extremely passionate photographer that has created internationally-recognised images in this area, with local knowledge and a committed relationship to the landscape!

This workshop has been developed to provide the ultimate takayna/Tarkine landscape photography experience. Come see for yourself what makes this part of the world so special!

Itinerary

Our first base in Smithton provides us with a great way to kick off our 7 days of landscape photography. This places us in a central position to explore both rugged coastal locations and some of the state’s premiere locations for rainforest photography. We’ll also have an educational session or two in our private conference room so you have plenty of tools and ideas to take into the rest of the week. After two nights here, we’ll make our way to our next base in Arthur River.

Arthur River provides incredibly close access to the Tarkine’s renowned wild coastline, with locations such as the Edge of the World just a few minutes down the road, as well as a short hour’s drive back to more of the region’s beautiful rainforests. Our two nights here will provide us with an amazing base to capture these world-class scenes. We’ll also join a local cruise down the Arthur River, where we’ll have the chance to capture mirror-like reflections, rainforest greenery, and even sea eagles in the trees. The cruise includes a delicious BBQ lunch at no extra cost, and provides a wonderful opportunity to learn more about this beautiful environment with our guides.

Our final base in Corinna places us deep amongst the rainforests in the southern area of the Tarkine region. Situated on the banks of the Pieman River, we’ll be surrounded by ancient moss-covered trees and autumnal fungi. On top of this, we’ll also be privately chartering our own small vessel to take us onto the river at sunrise, with the hopes of catching some more riverside rainforests and reflections under misty golden hour light.

On our final day, we’ll have the chance to photograph some hidden gems around Corinna once more, before heading over to Philosopher Falls after lunch in nearby Waratah. This final day has been extended from previous years to allow more time at this absolute highlight location; we’ll stay in Waratah for the night, before a transfer back to Launceston the following morning.

While I’ll make efforts to provide editing tuition sessions during the workshop, ultimately the priority is to ensure you’re getting high quality time in the field. Because of this, all guests are entitled to a free post-workshop 1-1 Online Tuition Session, where we can run through your photos together and tailor a video call to help you get the most from your workshop photos.

Flights & Logistics

It is required that guests arrive in Tasmania at least one day before the workshop commences; flights are permitted to depart after 3pm on the final transfer day back to Launceston. This avoids any chance of flight changes or other unforeseen circumstances either rushing or delaying our schedule. The meeting location will be provided during the information sessions.

Commencement

  • Launceston CBD - Thursday April 8th @ 9:30am

Conclusion

  • Launceston CBD - Thursday April 15th @ 1:00pm

Meals

During this workshop we will primarily be eating at local establishments or at restaurants within our accommodation. At Smithton, we’ll eat at the wonderful Kauri Bistro within Tall Timbers, with some great local options available for breakfast & lunch. At Arthur River we will have our dinners at the Marrawah Inn, just a short 15 minute drive from our accommodation. Corinna’s Tannin restaurant will provide us with all of our meals, including cooked lunches & dinners plus a continental breakfast. The Bischoff Hotel will provide our final meals via their in-house restaurant.

While guests will not have any mandatory cooking to do, two breakfasts and two lunches will need to be self-supplied during our time at Arthur River, and en-route to Corinna. This is partially due to the remote nature of this location with limited local options, as well as for the flexibility of eating in the field rather than needing to return to town. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase breakfast and lunch supplies at Smithton on day 3 en-route to Arthur River.

More details will be provided after booking; please get in touch with any questions you have about food on the workshop.

“The Tarkine workshop with Ben was first class. Ben is a great teacher and creates an atmosphere where you can ask anything, and ask again if you need. The field tuition was great; learning how to create compositions, getting real time feedback; learning additional technical features of my equipment and so much more. The locations were stunning the accommodation and food were fantastic. The workshop was full on but at the same time relaxing. I look forward to my next workshop with Ben.” - Jenny H; Tarkine Rivers Coasts & Forests 2026

“This was a superb workshop! I found it great to experience the Tarkine as a whole area, rather than the north, and the south as separate identities. Ben is a superb leader, teacher snd photographer. He knows well how to impart knowledge and understanding of how to capture the best images. I loved this workshop and would do it with Ben again. He also chose excellent locations, accommodation and eating places .
